Work Sharp

Does anyone have any experience or know anything about the Work Sharp system? My MIL wants to get one for me and if it won't do what I need I'll steer her toward the Jet.[:0] Not that she will spend that much.

I think it would be hard to get a consistant edge on a gouge or any of the other tools that have a rounded edge. It should work fine for a skew or anything square.

I have never used one but one of the guys at rockler said he would not give one to his to his worst enemy.

I've got one (the 3000) - thanks to the view port I have much sharper tools than before. Probably not as good as a setup with a full set of jigs, but I use the 'marker trick' and am very happy with it.

I sharpened my chisels and they are like razors and have a mirror finish. I don't get my turning tools that fine because the turn great even with a 'rougher' edge.

If you MIL is looking at it - be carefull - the 2000 has much fewer choices, etc than the 3000.

I have and use one, for straight and square tools it is great, for angle and curved tools it takes a lot of practice to get a consistent sharp edge. love mine as it gives a scary sharp edge with out the time to do it manualy.

I have the 3000 I use for the Chisels and Plane irons. It works great. That being said for $200 I would spend the little extra and go for the Jet.

I also have a SS Grider with wolverine for my turning tools.

I bought a WorkSharp 2000 a month or so ago. It does do an awesome job on chisels and other flat blades. I even tried some of my turning tools but didn't have much luck even using the port. (I used it on my cheaper tools rather than take a chance on ruining my higher quality tools - yeah - I'm a chicken!) My gouge is so wide that it was almost impossible to get a constant grind all the way across. But for $99 it is great for the chisels and hatchets and awls and scissors and stuff. I finally gave in and bought the Woodturner's Sharpening Kit at Woodcraft: the slow speed bench grinder with aluminum oxide wheels, the Wolverine jig and a diamond dresser for like $169.95. Now I have the best possible setup for my sharpening needs and still paid less than I would have for the Jet or Turmek.
