I just got back from Florida, and the first day home, a neighbor came and asked me about installing a room of carpet in a local trailer right here on the lake. Before i left, I was trying to get some work going so i started a c-list ad... Well, My wife informed me that i missed two or three calls, and i got a email for 300 feet of laminate flooring installation!! The laminate is scheduled for Wednesday, and the room of carpet for Monday!

Now i just need to make new ads and hope i get a few more bids!! Soon i will be able to get a cheap work van and my insurance, then it will be big bucks!!

Just had to brag a bit! I sure hope i get a few more bids... maybe a builder or two!

I am half way between Oklahoma City, and Lawton Oklahoma.

I am running ads in Lawton, and OKC. Unfortunately, i am at a disadvantage, because most stores offer installation with the material, and I am trying to earn enough money to get a van and insurance, then i can get actual contracts and work will not be an issue.

BUT... I also just started offering a consultation service. I can teach someone enough about flooring that they could get a good installation, and save more than my consult fee! Maybe I can get a few hits on that one as well!! I could have a van and insurance in no time with a dozen or so consults!!

Thanks everyone!!! That is kinda how i am feeling about it too. I finally am getting a decent shot at staying busy! I opened my email this morning to a 300 foot Ceramic tile bid!!! YES YES YES YES!!! Now i just gotta dig up some old pics and references for the people!

:bananen_smilies051:HEY LISTEN, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES IN LIFE. Its how you bounce back from them that shows your character! This is excellent news!! Just keep your head on straight and eyes focused and dont look back!!!:drink:

I would recommend putting your location, either in your profile or in your signature.

Congrats on the work.

Ron try this: Go to your local box store like lowes, Depot where ever Talk to the sales people let them know that for every job you get from them youll pay 20.00 cash on friday. The first couple weeks will be slow then watch out once word gets out how good and fast you are there will be no stopping the business.

FYI: Both Home Depot and Lowes forbid employees from "recommending" installers, other than their own contractors. If a HD or Lowes employee does this and management finds out, THEY WILL BE FIRED!!!!

As an alternative, you might talk to the respective store managers about the steps required to become an installer for them.

Step one: General Liability Insurance. In most cases, One million dollars worth, with 2 milly on aggregate.

Step two: Workers comp insurance (Used to could get a workers comp non coverage card, but dubya did away with that, so now you gotta buy the policy.) Covers all of your employees (BUT NOT YOU)

Step three: Vehicle appropriate for hauling rolls of carpet to the jobsite. They would laugh if i showed up in my little S-10 Blazer.

For Lowes, Depot, carpet stores, lumber liquidators, etc. etc. etc. Steps one, two, and three are needed to even be considered.

But thanks for the ideas!! I am working on some new listings locally that should at least increase the flow a little bit, but really it is the infamous vicious cycle... I need money to buy a van and insurance, but i need work to make money, but i need a van and insurance to work, but i need money for van and insurance, but i need van and insurance to make money.......

Yeah, but the rest of them may be worried that you might be their neighbor .
(sorry, couldn't resist). Oh, BTW, congrats on the work!

You ever see the Tom Hanks movie "The Burbs" i think it is called.... that totally reminded me of that movie I can imagine what my neighbors must think i am doing over here..... insomnia, so i am up at all hours..... loud machines..... strange chemical smells..... hmmmmmm.:eek:

Good thing i dont live in a trailer right Jeff?? ROFL. good stuff!

My neighbors thought I had a meth lab when I started casting. They kept wondering why I'd come out of the shop with a paint mask on. And what those fumes they kept smelling were.

I would avoid HD/Lowes !
Find contractors/homeowners .... do a good job for a reasonable price = repeat business!
Best of luck, Ron!
Glad to hear things are looking up for you.
