I know that I have a lot to learn. One of the things is getting wood ready to turn. I know that wood needs to be dry for some turning and other wood can be turned green.

A little over a month ago, a neighbor dropped two large pine logs in my yard. Delimbed, full length. I am cutting them up and they have lots of sap. I understand cutting out the pith from the logs and sealing the ends with sealer to let them dry.

My question is am I wasting my time? Is pine worth all the work? Will it dry and loose the sap?

I don't want to turn it wet.....not pine. I have turned other things wet for bowl blanks and then wrapped them with food plastic wrap and shelved them. They are drying just fine.

I am just asking the members about using pine and if it a good turning wood.

Thanks for your advice.

My opinion (and it's worth exactly what you're paying for it).... I wouldn't bother with the pine... you'll find it does a lot of tear out and is soft... YMMV, but I would look for a good hardwood....

I have turned pine, but it has lots of down falls for turning. I agree that it would be worth your time to work with different hardwoods.
