I found some oak today while I was out cutting that will be some beautiful blanks one of these days. Haven't seen oak this pretty in a looooooooong time. I ended up coming home with some elm, some cedar, and quite a bit of that oak.

Hope you like,

Emerson

That looks almost like a nice oak burl... some don't like doing oak, but I think it can be very pretty... I'll turn as much as I can get my hands on... it's tough wood, but a finished piece is usually gorgeous... looking forward to seeing what you do with it... don't cut it all for pens, make a pepper mill or bowl too....

Here is a pepper mill I recently did from an oak burl...

The second picture is a red oak bowl I turned from a tree that fell across the road near me and the farmer that was cutting it was just throwing the wood in the ditch... wish now I had gotten more of it, but we were on our way to town and I didn't want to haul a full load of wood to town and back...

Those are some good looking turnings. I turned some of it into bowl blanks, and some into bottle stopper blanks, and some pen blanks that I would dare to say would rival any pen blank on the internet at this time. They are absolutely GORGEOUS! What are the blank sizes for pepper mills?

Pepper Mills work good on 2-1/2 square and close to 12 inches up to 20 depending on what you want for a finished length, I've hear that 6 inch finished mills sell well,

The 2 1/2 size works, but my preference is to start with a 3x3 x whatever length you can get... I like to start with the 12 inch size, but have started with all different sizes... and Ken is right... I do well with the 6 inch mills, although don't do a lot that sized... I usually do 8 to 10 inch sizes and I only use the crush/grind mechanisms.... they are more forgiving on length than the standards with the knurl adjustment on the top of the mill... (I tend to be a little measurementally (or is that mentally) challenged)... CSUSA and Packardwood has about the best pricing on the c/g mechanisms if you buy 10 or more at a time... the regular sizes are with a 10 inch shaft that you can cut to whatever length you need....and CSUSA has just recently come out with an 18" shaft for making the bigger mills. I have two in my inventory now that are almost 14" high...
