I could use the expertise of our members to help me verify this piece of wood. I have it as Mesquite Live edge, but I am wondering if it Cherry? I am terrible at identifying woods so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

When I first saw your photo I immediately thought "Mesquite." Not sure of any particular species, though. Since mesquite has a distinct smell, if you're familiar with that smell try giving it a whiff.

Thanks John. It is sealed so I cannot smell it. I was thinking Cherry because of the reddish and the curly look near the bark.

does not look like mesquite to me.

mesquite sapwood is usually more yellowish, and the bark looks wrong to me as well.

For normal mesquite logs, the bark is wrong. For parts with burls or mistletoe inclusions, it's looking about right. Now that I'm seeing it on a home computer with a color calibrated screen, the sapwood doesn't look quite light enough.
