Wood identification help

A retiring pen turner generously gave me quite a few blanks. Among them were several of these light colored wood pieces. It is very light also to heft. Please give me your ideas.

Poplar is my guess.

Might be maple.

I use and have turned a lot of maple, positively no. Thanks for trying.

My guess is... hackberry or cottonwood.

Appears to be fast growing. Not seen the hackberry but could go with the cottonwood.

Were the others mostly domestic and common exotics? Or did he have really odd-ball stuff too? Looks like it could be an ash of some type: misc ash

Ash is roughly the same density and hardness as red oak, how do the blanks compare?

Chinaberry wood looks similar, a possibility for domestic grown wood. So does Leyland Cypress.

I've had sassafras that looked just like that. Still have it....a bit too soft for my liking.

I would cast my vote for sassafras as well. Especially if it has a pleasant odor when cut. Although that could be gone depending on how long it has been around.

I made a nice pen to laser engrave. The contrast was wonderful.
