Wood ID help

Well I went to an estate sale and found this piece of wood and someone had attached a cheap peice of tin to it and called it art. I only paid .75 cents for it and removed the tin thingy. It is about a foot long and several inches thick. I am not sure what it is either a burl or root but I want to cut it up for blamks and can't seem to find a good way to do it. Lots of swirls and such in the pics. Looks like Amboyna or redwood but it is a little heavy for redwood I think.

sure looks like a manzanite root burl to me. I have a few that look just like that. they are often used by artists as bases for small scultures.

Another vote for manzanita. It's as hard as a rock. I turned a small bud vase about 15 years ago, but never a pen. It has really aged into a deep dark chocolate color. A little hard to tell it's even a burl it is so dark in color. Keep some sap wood in the blanks if you can.

Hi Seer,

Attached is a pic of how I would slice it, if was me...!. This is based on what I can see from your pics, is is possible that I would do it differently if I had it in my hands to inspect thoroughly but, you should be OK this way...!
