Wood ID help

[Mortalis]

I received some lumber from a neighbor last year and I need some help identifying what it is. I believe he told me it was Maple but not positive.
I live in Southern Massachusetts and we have a lot of pines (which I'm sure this is not), Black Cherry, Ash and Hickory.
I've made several bowls from this lumber and it is hard as rock (almost).
I have attached pictures
Pictures 1 & 2 are of the raw lumber.
Pictures 3 & 4 are of the grain that results from turning.
You assistance is appreciated.

My neighbor travels a lot and I don't get to see him very often so we pass like ships in the night.

I would say it is some kind of maple based on wood coloring and what bark is there. Maybe beech as a second option.

Thanks, I was surprised myself when I cut some of it up for blanks and started turning them. It's very similar to spalting but without knowing what the species is it's hard to say.

+1 for maple. Doesn't look like beech.
