Went to see the new friend....the Arborist! Well, I've known him for a quite a long time, just never put what he does, together with what I like to do. His mom live's right next door to me and we finally did a hook up.....unfortunately, I didn't even get into the Black Walnut, or the huge piece of crotch/spalted/compression/whacky wood(looks to be something along the sweet gum?)
Todays haul?
OSAGE ORANGE (BOIS D'ARC) (HORSE-APPLE) (BODARK) or Maclura pomifera
I know the tree was planted a LONG time ago at a residence in Little Rock, AR. Most of the wood was left on site at the request of the owner(2 years aog)....but a scored the crotches at three main junctions!!! So, I've got two years of drying already on this wood. Was a little worried about the possibility of nails or screws or whatever people put in trees...but I haven't found any yet!
Most of the slabs are 4.25" thick! Most will end up as crosscut 3/4" or 7/8" pen blanks, 5" x 5" bowl blanks, 1-1/2"sq'd bottlestopper blanks, and then some regular 3/4" and 7/8" pen blanks! A few slabs are over 28" across.
Well, I had to run a few pieces across the bandsaw to see what I could see! 7/8"sq, and the board these are sitting on is actually 2x6 that runs around the top of the deck(reference)
Unfortunately, I'll never be able to turn all this stuff..........
