I got an invite to download Windows 8 and put it on a 5 year old machine today, 2 gig Ram, 384 gig on bd video memory, Dual Core Cpu and so far I really like it, fast seems to be very steady and every webpage I go to seems to load a lot faster without any issues, Just thought I would chime in with my thoughts on it.

You can tolerate the interface? I can't get past the interface and how un-user friendly it is to do anything but run the stock software.

I have it on a few machines for work and find it to be an abomination. If I want a phone interface, I will pull out a phone.

I always go the the desktop don't care for the main interface but I just installed Office 2010 in less than 5 minutes and it loads twice as fast.

I don't like the interface at all. I did the beta and can't stand the tiles. I hate they took away the start button as an option now. It would be good for a touch screen system, but I don't plan on doing that anytime soon. I uninstalled it after a couple days.

I took at look at the UI last night looks like it's more made for tablets than a desktop. Unless the performance is substantial over Win 7 don't think I'll switch.

Are you a developer? I thought they only went RTM for developers and system integrators. I need to get this on one of my laptops. I seem to spend too much time in the ship in the evenings. :)

I think the new interface is the Metro interface similar to the tiles on the smart phone right? Not sure I will like that either. I think they are looking at people going to tablets more often.

What I have learned so far and with downloading several apps from microsoft this older PC I put it on screams circles around my newer machine. I customized the desktop and tiles and it has worked flawlessly. There is no start button but you can pin the programs to you start bar which makes it just as easy to use. Also I pinned the run button so as for as needing a start button I am happy with it.

As with windows 7, I'll let everyone else play with and debug it for the first 6-9 months and look at reviews before I even touch it. Then, based on the reviews I'll either adopt it like Windows 7, or skip it all together like Vista. I spent 15-20 years trying out every new version of OS and software that came out, and reinstalling everything from scratch several times a year due to buggy early versions. Nowadays, I just want the few pieces of software I've chosen to work and not give me grief.

Of course having other interests these days, like working in the shop, skews this new attitude considerably. :)

Another day on 8 and so far no issues at all. Been figuring out how to make it work better. I pinned the programs folder and the run button to the start and I can go between both the tablet view and a desktop view. Gradually I hope I can get it to work like win 7 or xp with clicks but for now it appears stable and faster than my XP machines, definetly beats Vista.

I haven't upgraded anything either. I don't normally upgrade or replace things until they don't do what I need them to do. Running XP on desktop and Vista on laptop. With the $40 update available soon, I wanted to see if Windows 8 would be worth it. Since the developer's evaluation was free, I thought I would try it. I always liked puzzles  and that's what this is like for me.

Well I have been running Windows 8 for 3 months and got a Start Button for it and some settings I wanted and it runs very well. The start button is an addon that lets you choose XP, Vista or Win7 and works well. So far I like this program and it does run fast.

I have read to many bad reviews on windows 8 to make the switch. Heck, I am still using Vista!!! Works fine for me. Lot of complaining about the interface with windows 8 and gamers really hate it, at least that is what they say in the reviews I've read.

I think the difference between the typical review and Jerry's is that a reviewer generally plays with something for a very limited period prior to writing the review. Jerry, on the other hand, has taken time to live with it, learn how to use it, and adapt it to fit his needs and desires.

My concern is drivers. Are WIN7 drivers compatible, or is it a whole new set of drivers?

So far every driver I loaded has worked mind you I am running it through a KVM Switch but so far everything works fine. I hardly even use the Tiles desktop but it has a couple cool features but I am using it like a desktop with the Start Button and everything. You would think you are looking at a Win7 desktop if you did not know any better.
BTW I work on computer systems for a living so it is fun to play with something new and even for the price it is great when it comes out.

After 60 days I finished my trial. On the laptop, Windows 8 worked great. It was faster and had fewer errors than Vista. On the desktop it was a failure as the display resolution was limited to less than the native resolution of the monitor by the graphic card driver. Card is no longer supported, so no updates. Will consider updating the laptop to run the 64 bit version that I tried. The desktop will stay as is with XP.
