There is about 15 or so 1/2 ton truckloads of hardwood outside the sedwick county zoo free for the taking in one of their parking lots. I grabbed 2 large blocks of very figured wood. (too dark to post a picture of them tonight)

The largest round block would be a few feet across so one of them is pretty old growth trees..

If you have a chainsaw or a large bandsaw, your in luck

The one block pictured alone would be almost 2 ft across.

Holy mother...! the Canadian Council in that location is very generous to the public, cutting and living it there for people to pic up and not having it all shredded/chipped like up here, is certainly a bonus. I wonder who is going to do the clean-up afterwards...???

I wish I was in driving distance, I would clean it all up without any complains...!

What wood is it...???

You lucky "doggies"...!!!

Cheers
George

I would have grabbed more, but I got to tote it 2300 miles home in a few weeks so I was only able to take a few blocks (heck, what I did take weighed over 100+ lbs)

I guess its pretty common for them to do this with dead trees or trees they need to have removed.. I actually need to go to another place tomorrow to haul a load of brush to a free wood dropoff area outside the town here, cant wait to have a look around at what other junk trees were taken there
I believe its Oak or Elm and some really figured burly areas. The chunks I grabbed have some sapwood on them too.

Dang, nice score buddy!

Are you going to have any trouble getting that stuff back across the border?

Sure hope not

I am going to debark it and then see if I can locate a bandsaw mill down here to slice it to planks for me or at least saw it into blocksfor me. I could always say its my boards I use for under our 5th wheel jacks lol

If I can locate someone tomorrow, I may go pick up a few more blocks.

Only time I was ever questioned with wood in plain view in the truck at customs was going into the USA.

Heres a picture of the 2 blocks I grabbed partially wet down with water to show grain.. What a shame this is all I grabbed.. there is a lot more left there just as figured.

I will be travelling home with an empty freshwater tank (that will save me 800lbs).. maybe I should take another drive there.....

I'm thinking about loading up the dog and me in my CR-V and going down and getting some of that (I'm about 2 hours away).

Head on down. It looks better in person

I think they must have had one big pile there at one time by the amount of scrap bark and sawdust there.

Heading to that free brush dropoff place tomorrow and was told by my FIL that there is always wood there like the blocks I got. He thinks its Elm.

Well, Made it home no problems with the wood. I even had it sitting in the back of the truck. No questions asked or anything. I did have it debarked and cut up some to make sure nothing was living in any of the voids, etc.. Did see a BIG wolf spider when I was loading it into the truck though.. DANG! I hate spiders lol

BTW: There is a new load dropped off every day about 4:30-5pm, I was there again when they dropped off a load from that days tree cuttings and they confirmed it was ELM. The city of wichita, the sedwick zoo and a tree cutter business partnered up to provide this wood for free to anyone who wants it.
