Why no delete button?

Why is there no delete button on threads? After a little while there's no edit button either. I stated a thread and got no replies so maybe this isn't the right place or I asked the wrong question, I would like to delete it.
I can understand deleting posts willy nilly would defeat the purpose of a forum but it seems like the ability to delete should be there. Should I PM a moderator?

You can post "this thread closed" then the moderators can take it from there.

Click on the little yellow triangle and ask the moderators to close the thread. Giving your reason....they'll eventually get around to it. Or you can just let it die.

They have had problems in the past with members deleting threads that caused havoc. Especially after there are replies posted in the thread. Both the delete and edit functions are disabled because of problems caused in the past.
