The picture with blue background looks much clearer. the color and grain of the wood really stands out and the details of the clock face are more evident. Of course that is on my monitor it may be different for other folks.

The blue background provides more contrast and makes the detail in the piece stand out more. The blue is an excellent choice for that piece it provides the contrast without going too far and making it gaudy.

John....The grey background is more realistic from a customers point of view as you can see through the scroll work and that is how it would look like in a customers home. The blue does give a good contrast. I guess I could go with either but I would not mix the two colours on a page.

John,
As an old portrait photographer, there is a trick. I attended a Photo Institute ( about a hundred years ago) and was classically trained....now days in Portraiture we have thrown the book of rules away, but the commerical-- "product" photographic industries still uses this idea. You do not want your background to "over-power" your product...your instant focus of your eyes should be the product...so, the old trick is to squint your eyes to the point where it is somewhat difficult to see detail and look at your photo..the thing that sticks out the most should be your product. That is called intial impact. I think that the blue accomplishes that more than the white/gray....

I like the blue!

I have a wall in the hallway that is pretty much the same color that I hang my scrollwork on. It really makes the artwork pop!

1st let me say....the scrollwork is very nicely done. I would be proud to have it in my home.

I would have preferred to have seen a darker background as my eyes always goes to the lightest part of an image. That would help bring my eyes to your scrollwork without having to search for it.

I prefer the grey background, the blue seems to overpower the piece and its the first thing that caught my eye.

I'd have to agree. I like both, and the blue offers more contrast, but I think the gray looks better as a background. It seems to draw your attention right to the piece.
Beautiful work!!

John, the gray shows more fine detail simply because the backlight on the background shows through the fine detail. If you can focus a spot light on the blue behind the product to give a lighter background behind the boots, that would make that photo by far the best. It is already the better of the two.

For a web site, I would go with the blue.
The scroll work stands out and you are trying to catch the attention of those on the site. Considering most views on a web site are less than 2 seconds, you need to have something to keep them there.
