Hello to all,

I've just purchased a Jet 1220 lathe and am in the market for a chuck. I know about the SuperNova2 on sale at Woodcraft. However, next month they're selling the G3 with 50mm jaws, 35mm bowl jaws, pin jaws and mini Cole jaws for 149.99!

So which one? or I've been thinking about getting greedy and buying both.

Ideas?

Thanks,
David

Well the Super2 is a totally enclosed chuck and is way better than the G3
The G3 is a smaller chuck and much lighter as well. I have both and if you are feeling greedy then I would go for both.

I bought the Oneway Talon from Hartville with the spigot jaws and no reason yet for anything else for penturning. At one time, WoodNet members received an additional 10% off non-sale items -- haven't ordered from them in a while so not sure still applicable.

Be careful of the Nova chuck. I talked with a Woodcraft employee (also a friend on mine) last week and the reason they put them on clearance is because they are not going to be carrying them. Seems they have some plastic parts in them and are really bad about coming apart. I don't know this for a fact as I do not own one, but I was planning on buying one on sale until he told me this.

I personally the the Talon is the best bang for the buck for any lathe up to 16". It can be used on a mini lathe and move up with with you.

Having had the pleasure of using one a few weeks ago I have to agree, the Nova's are nice, but the Talon beats just about everything but an Axminster

Tody ... Being very closely associated with the powers that be in the Woodcraft store I just called them and verified that they ARE NOT DISCONTINUING the Nova line by any means. In fact, a newer Nova chuck IS replacing the older style in several weeks to come, hence the recent sale prices on the Super Nova chuck.

Personally, I have used Nova chucks on some rather hefty bowl turning projects and have yet to have any problems of any description. With the properly fitted and sized jaws there should be no inkling of problems at all.

As far as plastic parts, maybe the back plate is some form of plastic, but it is there to protect the internal metals parts from dust invasion, etc., and it does it's job very adequately.

I bought the Nova2 and also the G3. When the Barracuda Tn went on sale
I got that too.

I would have no problem recommending any of these as long as the user
understands they they are for small work. All function well. At that price
I'd buy the G3 again. The Nova2 does have the closed back which is a
plus, but not strictly necessary. You just need to be a little more aware
of your tool cleaning/maintenance if you get the G3. Brush it out, blast it
with compressed air ..

Thank you! I agree, Woodcraft is NOT discontinuing Nova line. Yup, I've known about the plastic indexing back, I prefer that to the open back G3. For what I plan on using it for they both will work just fine.

Now that I'm feeling greedy............... I picked up the SuperNova2 already, purchased the bushing, now I'm just waiting for the G3 to go on special next month. Maybe the Barracuda might have been a wiser choice ( everyone who owns one raves about them) I'm happy with my decision.

Thanks again,
David

You made a good choice -- You purchased the flexibility to change to another lathe with a larger spindle and keep using your investment in a good chuck.

I have a couple of Barracuda 2 chucks. They really want to be only a 1 by 8 (or 3/4 by 16) thread and they were not easy to convert when I got a big lathe with 1 1/4 by 8 headstock. I use one with the Jet Midi in Tucson and the other only for finishing work with the big lathe.

The Talon made the change with a different insert and your SN2 will have that opportunity also.

What the G-3 will get you is extra jaws and since the jaws are interchangable with the Novas, you will be able to mount different jaws on the chucks and change chucks instead of jaws.

I have been told that the Woodcraft WoodRiver inserts will fit the Nova at lower cost. Do not know if the runout is different.

Bob Hamilton uses some Talon flat jaws with the SN2 in this UTube video

So keep your eyes peeled for Talon jaws too. (those flat jaws are about $40 but do allow some handy mounting opportunites -- a push towards a slippery slope).
