Evelyn and I were talking about our local chapter of IAP and I commented on the fact that a lot of the members are or were members of the Navy, she wondered why we were all pen turners. I said it was because of a phase the Navy used. Can anyone tell be what that phase is?

A motto of many a USN ship: Happy ship, happy crew. Merry Christmas, turn to.

For those not familiar with the phrase 'turn to', it means "get your @#*)&^% @$$ in gear and start working." Usually voiced by a coffee cup wielding, cigarette smoking, somewhat paunchy, sitting-in-a-wheeled-chair-with-a-pron-magazine-in-hand Chief Petty Officer (CPO).

Your right about that John. But every now and then you can get a Chief back at his own game. In the late 70's we had a Chief who loved to saw ok let's get the lead out and got to work. He came in to my shop and made that statement. So I open a desk drawer took out our lead block and ask him what he wanted us to do since the lead was out. He shook he head said I should gave know better and walked out. He never used the term again.

Hey!!! As a Senior Chief Petty Officer for many years, I take personal offense to obvious malingers comments!!! As a CPO and SCPO, I as many other CPO's ALWAYS treated my fellow sailors 1st rate and always attempted to train and bring them up as I was and to be 1st rate sailors and to take care of and train their fellow shipmates as we were by our 'old hands'!!! A CPO is ALWAYS a CPO and is ALWAYS upheld to these high standards! True CPOS's, SCPO'S and MCPO's ALWAYS take care of their troops!!!

The statement I made was not meant to offend it was just a way to have some fun and as my shop did have lead in our shop the only who could "GET THE LEAD OUT" And this CPO was not one who treated his people right. There are many CPO, SCPO and MCPO who do take care of there troops but there are those who don't.

For those that don't know what PWL said is true. When I was stationed at NAS Millingtion we had a PRC who loved his coffee and never ever ever cleaned his cup. We'll one day we played a joke on him we got a new cup and set it on the cup board. He came in and when he saw his cup he had a fit that someone cleaned his up and to never do that again. He had a bad habit of setting his cup on out cutting table and walking away. As planned he took out a roll of fabric set it on the table rolled it out and knocked his cup on the floor. You would have thought the world had come to and end. I was told in stop what I was doing an go buy him a new cup. So I did and when I got back handed him the bag his old cup was in he could not laughing. He said he had a lot of practical jokes played on him but that was the best. He was a great chief and took care of all his people.
