I've been around a fairly long time and when I log on I get the front page which lists the # of members and guest on and the name of the members.
Up until a few months ago we had during the day light hours usually 4 lines of members anywhere between 75 and 85 members, now it' seems we have a hard time getting two lines of members 35 -45. Today it avraged less than 50 and you would think a week end would have more, just thinking out loud.....

Five of us were at Mike Roux's house all day. Mike built some brackets and we mounted a DRO for my tail stock on the metal lathe. Marshall (Mapster) made a special pen. I hope he gets it posted in SOYP. But, you're right.....I noticed the lack of attendance too.

Actually... Seeing 50 on here today is probably pretty HIGH, given that every woodcraft in the country was sponsoring Turn for the Troops... And I saw several area threads where members were going to be there today.

No matter how you slice it, activity is way down on here.

How exactly are you slicing it? The statistics don't support your statement.

When I have time I'll post some year over year stats, but here's some:

Month / New Threads / New Posts

Oct 2010 / 904 / 9293
Oct 2011 / 1516 / 14957

Jeff I am refering to the last 2-3 months. Typically I would see from 20-30 post during the week overnight and I would have those to read in the mornings. Lately it has been 8-10 posts made overnight. This would typically be midnight to 7am forum time.

Has been.....

I think I noticed a drop off in the spring maybe March or April. I thought that maybe it was just because activity had been high during the B-Day Bash. And, it has seemed to remain lower than it was last year. I wouldn't speculate too much about why.

I will probably get barked at by someone somewhere but I have noticed this also. I suspect it being changes that have been made. It just is not the same or as fun to get on here anymore. I find myself visiting but not as much as I used to.

I'm a "newcomer". Been a member a while but just recently started posting and I can't imagine it being much better. Seems every time I come here I either see something that makes me whistle out loud (with nobody to hear) or I pick up an excellent tip on something important. I KNOW that in the last couple months my finishing has improved big time.

i've been on all weekend if it counts for anything
even made a couple of new threads. i think you should all go and look at them, right now, go. what are you waiting for. stop reading this. it under pen photography. titled thank you, thank you and thank you. go on. tell your friends. now

I blame confirmation bias. If you 'think' things were better 'in the old days' then they will be.

Jeffs numbers show us UP 50% over the same month last year. If you see that and still believe that less is going on, then there isn't much else that will convince you.

Maybe

That's entirely possible - I really only watch about 4 forums very closely and it seems activity is down on them. But, as with all ad hoc observations, it could be that topics of interest to me is down - making it appear to me that there is less activity.

I think we're seeing more new members and not as much of some more seasoned members. Could be that we just don't see as many of the usual names and it appears to us as less people overall. That's what I've been noticing anyways.

Maybe it's just one of those "run hot-run cold" seasons! I've not been on a lot lately, I've been having to boost the financial coffers for winter. That's called WORK!!! BUT as it gets colder outside, it gets warmer inside!!! Guess where I'm gonna be? ON HERE!!!

I had not noticed, but I never go to the home page... when I log on, I go directly to the forums and start reading... but I think this is first time I've been on the forum this week... it's been a full and crazy schedule in my household.

This forum is my home page and stays active on my pc 24/7. I read constantly.....HOWEVER.....I only log in when I need or want to post. The rest of the time I would appear in the count as a guest.

I wish I didn't have to log in so much. I would like it if it kept me logged in for a longer period of time. But it is what it is. Regardless I am reading posts all the time.

Gary, What browser are you using? I never log out and thus never have to log back in.

I use IE9. It logs me out after about 10 min of inactivity....sometimes less

Remember me

When you log in check the remember me box next to your ID and it will keep you logged in. Otherwise there has to be something in IE that will let you adjust that. I have a number of sites that log me out but IE doesn't.

I gotta go with Jeff's numbers on this one. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that 2 weeks ago on Halloween the site broke its all time record for people logged un at one time - 449. The previous record was 402 set on the first day of the bash this year. Before that, if I remember correctly, the highest number was 259. Perhaps Smitty hit the nail on the head, when he said that maybe it felt like less activity, because there was less he was interested in.

It should never log you off if you've clicked the "remember me" box when you logged on.

Gary,
What Jeff said. I use IE9 and never have to login. Check the box and you should be good to go.

Regarding the "Who's On" list being light on members...

Of the 88 members who have invisible mode enabled, 35 are daily visitors. When invisible mode is on, they show up as guests.

I have to correct this. They show up in the member count, not the guest count. The appearance of lower activity because of fewer names in the LIST of member names logged on is the more noticeable thing.

Yep! I'm back again today! No more "vulgarity" for about a month! :)
