It's been ages since I changed my profile photo and I decided that since I'm new here I really should use a recent one. One with gray hair so it doesn't look like I'm cheating on a dating profile. The only recent one I have is one my wife took of me wearing the PAPR respirator, which reminded me that I wrote a whole blog post on "What they don't tell you about backpack-style respirators" which is a must-read if you are planning to purchase one. I can understand why manufacturers are reluctant to address an awkward topic but safety concerns really should override any PR concerns.

TL;DR: Buy the vapor filters in the initial purchase and don't learn the hard way like I did.

They are good things when a person has medical issues with the lungs. I've read all the raw data, research papers, and the lot. I've come to the conclusion that it is a rare thing to have lung issues for the hobbyist. If you are in that environment all day long, that may be a different concern. And once again, if you have lung issues. Other than that, I think these companies are making bank on scaring people with selective data.

Funny article, I've had friends that did the same thing much to their regret. I suggest turners get a air quality monitor which includes PM 2.5 readings. You might be surprised at what your breathing in. This is the one I have:

Temtop Indoor Air Quality Meters PM2.5 AQI Air Quality Monitor Home Air Testing Kit, P10

Prolonged exposure to particulates PM 2.5 aren't good for anyone. They have an accumulative effect on the lungs. Of course it's a personal decision. Your health is yours to take care of. Smoke in your own house, but not mine or public places I'm in.

I do not disagree but I'll offer two pieces of context... First, I am one of those people who needs the respirator due to medical issues. Second, the blog post linked is humorous satire. Based on an actual incident and exaggerated a bit for effect, but the advice is, I believe, sound.

Thanks, I knew it wasn't just me. :)

Agreed. Mine arrived right before the Wynn HEPA filter was delivered so I was able to do before/after tests. Replacing that textile filter on the dust collector with the HEPA filter made a HUGE difference and the monitor helped me to quantify that.

I went with the Triton version about 14 - 15 years ago and used it off an on. It was overly bulky (for me) but effective. I had become very allergic to CA fumes and had tried many variations of finishes that did not meet my needs or wants for a finish - which took me back to CA but with the need of a good respirator. Fogging was a problem with static full face mask for me. I needed a forced air. At that time the Trends that I found were in the $500+ range and the Triton was half that. The Triton battery was not NiCad but not lithium either. It only lasted about 3 years. I couldn't find a replacement and set it aside. As a result I went with separate eye covers for my glasses and 99 respirators over my nose and mouth, which worked OK. I have 4 or 5 respirators that I use. During Covid, I pulled out my Triton and then ordered a fan and parts that I could make my own forced air system for it. IN practice, it worked but I ran into problems with time and then misplaced the fan system; found it a few months later but couldn't find the filters. I let it go. One of these days when I find everything I am going to finish it. I was making it with the switch on the front and a high up backpack filtration and battery rather than a fanny pack.

I enjoyed your write up! 😅

Sounds like you've tried a bit of everything but I like the DIY version the most. You get to put stuff where it makes the most sense.
