My dad was able to a really good deal on a pallet of wood from a local supplier that had various species on it, however none was labeled as to what it was. Some was Purpleheart, Canarywood, Walnut, Maple, etc, but this one has us stumped as to what it is. It kind of looks like Cherry, but the grain is a little too pronounced. It also resembles Oak, but the pores are not big enough. Any ideas?

I guess it probably is cherry. This is a sample off of a much larger board. The board itself resembles oak rather than cherry, but who knows. I'm definitely not an expert on wood. Thanks for the help.

take a picture of the larger board if you can. I am going to go against the grain here and say it is a type of Oak. It look more like the oak I have and not the cherry. The light in the picture is making it difficult

If the board is rough saw, then it will probably look a lot like most wood, and depending how sawn, it can easily look like oak.
The piece you posted looks very much like cherry though, as it does not show much open grain like most oaks would have, but has a tighter grain like and tinting like cherry.

It shows up here as a bit green. If it is lighter than oak and has a very different smell, it could be sassafras. We have some around here that grows into usable wood. I have 3 screen doors made from it. Good strong yet light wood. My guess and $5 and you have some coffee at Micky D's.
