Hey all,

My wife and I bought an antique step hutch today. By the color, I originally thought it was pine but now that I look closer, it isn't. The drawers seem to be made of the same wood and it's pretty dark with some orange in it.

Does anybody know what this is?

Pic #4

This one kinda makes it look like walnut but the color confuses me.

Not going to guess on the wood but it looks like color is from stain. The dowels are the same color, which indicate the whole thing is stained. It appears that the top has putty over nail holes which often resists stain.

Stained yellow pine aka pumpkin pine (ponderosa pine) Pictures 1-3 look a lot like some honey stained furniture I made with yellow pine.

Picture 4 is hard to place. Could be stained popular.

I kinda thought the same I thing when I bought it. But the grain seem much different from and pine I've seen. I have some other pine pieces and it isn't the same. Plus, there aren't any telltale signs of the soft wood like edge dents and distressing. I can't easily make a mark with my fingernail.

The entire piece looks to be made from the same type of wood.

This grain ...

... and this points me away from a soft wood and towards something like pecan or some other hardwood.

ASH wood.

Antique Step Hutch wood.

Sorry I couldn't help it.:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Had to research the ashes . Doesn`t look black , blue , green , red or white , he didn`t find it in Europe or Oregon , on a mountain , in a swamp or in the water , so I can only conclude that that it has , like Cinderella`s coach , turned into a pumpkin .

Definitely a hardwood . You mentioned the drawers were made of the same wood . Any chance of an unstained , slightly sanded end grain shot from those ? Forest products lab could give you an absolute ID for free from a very small sliver .

I decided it is butternut.

I wanted it to be old American chestnut because of the rarity but I think the end grain points to butternut.

Thanks for the help! :biggrin:
