So I am working on an order of Trimlines. I have 5 to go and I am on part 2 of one. While I am turning I get a little chip out on the Tip end so I decide "This is Burl who would notice a patch" well I am fixing w/ some shavings and CA and at some point my Mandrel and Bushing become one. To make matters worse I put Loctite on the threads on the Mandrel to keep it from unscrewing so I can't get this piece apart to save the blank:mad::mad:. So now a trip to WC is in my very near future:biggrin: (NOW) to get a new Mandrel, as mine is........well lets just say it has seen better days. If this was Part 1 of the 2 part pen I would have turned it off and made it easier but I already have a lot of time and money in this pen as my CA is not drying in the cold so I have to use Accelerator. Ohh that reminds me while at WC pick up accelrator... Any other day and I would walk away but need to turn these pens over Saturday and my Shop time is super limited these days.

Thanks for listening

I was just at Woodcraft this morning! Spent too much money. I was actually looking at their mandrels. I had a $10 off of $25 coupon.

I realize that this won't help you this time, but in considering your predicament, three words come to mind for the future:

  • Turning
  • Between
  • Centers
Contact JohnnyCNC at http://penturnersproducts.com/, and do a search here for the same terms. You'll need a good 60 degree live AND dead center and bushings for the kits that you build. Discuss it with Johnny, and he'll get you all set up. I'm trying to think of the last time I used a pen mandrel. Hmm... can't remember.

A thin parting tool made out of a butter knife could help you separate the bushig from the blank and the mandrel. Tehn a touch with the barrel trimmer and mabe a little sanding to bring it back to the right size The barrel will be a little shorter by about 1/16 but you can save it and the trimline, like all the slimline are not sensitive to the barrel lenght. Use it as the top half of the pen, it will still look good. Just my .02

You can use a propane torch with a light heat to loosen the locktite and acetone to loosen the glued part. If you was your mandrel with a little furniture wax then the CA won't stick to it. I wax my bushings and then nothing sticks. I turn between centers, but also use a mandrel so waxing things makes it easier.
