I live on the eastern side of Virginia not Upstate New York! You would never know that based on the number of snow storms we have seen this year.

1" of snow shuts this place down for a day or two. The current 4"-6" may shut us down for the majority of this week. The scary part is the worst portion of the storm hasn't even shown up yet!

We are expecting 8-12" when it is all done. I took some pics. I hope you enjoy them.

Oh well, guess we just wait it out and turn some pens or something.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!!

Don't ya just love the white stuff? But what you got there is what came out of my hair after I snowblowed our first 18" of the year, then got dumped on again with another 5". And to top it off on New Years weekend we are expecting at least another 20"+!!! Man I am sick of Winter!

The last 3-4 yrs, the jet stream has been further south. The air masses generally run west to east out of the north, "Alberta Clipper" as the call it. Last few years we've been getting the "Pineapple Express" instead, which is still from the west, but south west instead of north west. The air mass above central Canada generally remains pretty stable because it is dry up there, but the air is very very cold, and over the same last few years, the air pocket in the north has been larger. The colder the air, the less snow you have..it's a trade off, but which is better is arguable! The larger volume of cold somewhat stable air, pushes the jet stream further to the south, and the moisture follows that stream, so that is where it snows the most often. Minnesota is right on this line where the warmer wetter air from Hawaii hits that cold Canadian mass and deflects downwards below the great lakes. The air stream thins out after that initial impact, so Minnesota and the states in that area take a wider and bigger hit and the rest of the lower states along the jet stream receive a long thin and more predictable line of snow.

Northern Michigan..the U.P. as we call it, and New york state do however accumulate more snow than most states in the interior, regardless the jets stream patterns and this is because they are at the end of a long lake. Lake superior being the largest lake, the yuppers receive mega snow and mega cold. The mainland of Michigan is far better off because although Lake Michigan in the 3rd largest lake, it stretches north to south instead of east to west like lake Erie does, so we receive moderated temps by the warm water of the lake without there being enough time to accumulate so much lake effect snow.

I like the view off the back of your house with all the trees, it's very relaxing to look at.

Never a better excuse to turn Fred :)

I wish it snowed here, would love the photographic opportunity - think I may have to come visit some time soon!!

When we had about an inch of accumulated snow one morning here in Phoenix, they closed the schools because the bus drivers didn't know how to drive in snow! By 9am it was all melted, but we had an official "snow day!"

I know this is nothing for you northern folks! I grew up in Illinois through the mid 80's...I know what snowstorms are all about but this area is not at all used to this kind of snow.

This is the 3rd or 4th snow storm this season already....I lost count..... We normally see 1 every 3-4 years.

The weather has been wacky the past few years.....Rain/Mudslides in the west to snow storms in the southeast.....

Who pissed off Mother Nature? Please if you did it......make up so the madness can stop!!

Ya Fred -- and it was uphill both ways to and from school and they never had a snow day.

I work for the Fed -- and was working in DC in 2000 when we had this kind of weather. The office was empty except for the Alaskans working in DC -- we came to work rather than sitting in a hotel room. The "Right hand side" is boring in a storm without a lathe.

Totally agree with you Kev! I am not worried about driving in the snow....I am worried about the idiot that has never driven in the snow!!!

People around here drive crazy when it snows. Always in a hurry and don't worry about the frozen stuff!

Could be worse

Be thankful you don't live in Buffalo...They call 12" a "dusting". Of course I moved to Delaware to get away from snow....It found me.

this is born and raised in michigan fritz64 telling i am getting annoyed with the weather. i came to fl. to get out of the snow and cold. this is the 2nd year my water pipe froze. but then its the 2nd that im on the outside of mich. and reading not shoveling, LOVE IT.

great photos AND what is wrong with living in New York State?????????? at least a few inches did not shut down the state a few feet a day or two but inches, no comment :) JUST TEASING YOU!!

Fred,

That patio sure does look familiar. Guess we won't be having a meeting for a while, huh? I had the pleasure of having to drive in this morning. Not much fun. Like you said, it is all the idiots on the road I am worried about too. I hope it does not melt and freeze tonight. I have to drive home in the morning (assuming tomorrow is duty section only).

They are calling for 8 - 12 here. I'd love to see 12 - 18. That would be a great plowing event. Guess I'll just sit here and watch it pile up. Enjoy your day in the shop...

Well, I just got done shoveling for the first time. We have 9.5" on my back deck and it is still coming down with some of the heaviest snow to come. It is supposed to snow until tomorrow morning.....

Like I said, this is not much to a northern state that is used to getting snow but this area has very few plows and that is only for the major interstates. We will never get the side roads plowed ever!

Beautiful pics off your porch. I really feel sorry for all my brothers and sisters that feel the urgent need to shovel or otherwise remove snow. Here in good ol' KY, we are ecologically sound. We do not shovel, plow, salt or anything else with our snow. We are conservative of our environment. We firmly believe that God put it there and He will remove it when he is ready. Oh yes, a heavy frost now will close schools and churches around here. Didn't used to be that way.

Well, we ended up with officially 13.4" of snow! That is the 3rd most of all time!!! We were less than 1/4" of 2nd most.....

No work today and I'll bet the roads are just horrible. I don't plan to go anywhere but the short walk down the path to my shed!!

Everyone that was affected, please be careful!!!

Fred,
Not to hijack your thread, but this is what we awoke to on Christmas... first time in nearly 30 years... by the end of day yesterday I think we were up to about 5 or 6 inches... we had a couple of inches on Jan 20, 2008 (I had to take the wife to hospital at 0500 for a 7 am surgery is why I remember), but nothing like this in the 5 years we've been in Tennessee...

It's pretty, but not my cup of tea... an by Friday, it'll be mid 50's.. almost t-shirt and shorts weather.

bring it on

Here is what we are stuck dealing with.....takes me a long time to hike out the back deck all the way to the ski areas. Is this the best all Mother Nature can dish out? Bring it on, we want to ski until June!
Cheers

I think it was my wife. She has been yelling at God about how much she HATES SNOW! Her latest threat is "Don't make me come up there!"

So far we haven't gotten a single snowflake, so I don't know...

Cheers

I had a t-shirt that said "I skied Killington on the Fourth!" One year awhile back, there was a cold spring and not much sun. They stayed open and had a free day on the 4th of July. Everyone who showed up got a t-shirt.

We ski'd once on July 4th but it was not much to talk about other than being able to say we did it. More rocks and dirt than snow and no t-shirt!
We took beat up rental skis, no way we were taking our good sticks.
My goal is to do a triple.....go up in the morning and get a few runs in, then hustle down and play a few holes of golf then get on my bike and ride a few miles all on the same day. Very do-able toward the end of the season if the snow sticks at the higher elevations above 9,000 feet.
I know this is going to be the year!
Yee Haw!

Better U(tah) than me

I think it's a great idea to get lots of snow in Utah....we'd be more than happy to let you have all of ours. It's much more fun fishing, baking. and swimming when it's a tad too warm to snow.

wow that's some snow. I was just thinking that we have not seen much snow here in western NY now I guess that you have just taken the glory and the snow away from us.... well I will let you have it it is not a problem for you to enjoy and keep it. I have no need for it this year. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!
