Hey everyone,

When you think of a handmade pen, what is the first image or thought that comes into your head?

I usually seem to think of a statesman or emperor with amboyna or HRB, but that's just me...

Hand made pen = ink well with feather sitting ready. Aw, shucks, that is not funny. Really a well executed slim line, not B2B; a very well finished fountain pen with a bit of bling or something similar to these.

When I think of a "hand made" pen I think of ldb2000, or Skiprat, or Hewunch, and a couple of others hand made pens. No kits.

Personally, the ones that fit the picture in my head the best for that description so far are Chris's kitless or vintage nib bulb fillers. Not sure why, I love lots of other peoples pens, but these are what I think of when I hear that phrase.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking pens from "component sets", cause that's what I'm making most of the time. But when I see a statesman or Jr Emperor or whatever, I may think "great job, that's a nice one" but the phrase "handmade pen" don't usually come to mind. Not sure why that is, but there, I said it. I feel better.

WOW! I just saw this post and I have to say... "I am not worthy to be mentioned with Butch and Steven" This made my day, and I so appreciate the compliment.

Hand Made says rookie.
Hand Crafted says artisan.

I like it. This is kinda like turning in the shop, then you buy a smock and all of the sudden your turning in your studio.

Gee, really? Is that all it takes? If it's a studio, do I have to keep it clean(er)?

So, I am guessing you have a smock? And no, on the clean part. Its you that will be cleaner. At least thats what my other half says.

Can I call my apron a smock?

Actually, no, I've always figured that If I got one of those I'd have to sweep the shavings up off the floor and store the wood scraps and random squares of stuff in some sort of organized fashion. I usually wear an old faded pink floyd t-shirt to turn in. Of course, that's what I usually wear for everything else too :-)

I always thought "Dark Side of the Moon" was a funny thing to have on the front of a t-shirt :eek:

It's an even funnier thing to have in the back of your mind :-)

Actually, most of the imagery associated with that album doesn't include the words. The original license of the image from Storm Thorgerson and Hipgnosis does not include any text, and so anything you see that does is most likely a knockoff and not strictly legal (I just thought you might like to know)

James, thanks then rest of us are called pen assemblers, huh? We don't hand craft or make pens, we use chop stick like assembly to put together different part of a pen. OK, we get it. :crying::beat-up:

If your smock is pink you are turning in your Salon.
When I think of hand made or hand crafted I think of Cigars, Euros, and the like. When I think of Custom made I think of Non kit pens. There is a clear separation between the two for me. Custom made requires a whole lot of tools and skills I never plan on having.

My mom and wife both wore smocks,.......When they were pregnant. How old is that?

If you wear a Turners Smock then you craft pens in a studio. If you wear T-Shirts, Sweat Shirts or Flannel Shirts you turn pens in the shop.

The results are the same Hand Crafted Custom Pens.

Maybe

I agree except change the Hand Crafted to Custom Crafted:biggrin:

I guess I would think that depends on whether or not it is custom crafted.

I would like Hand Crafted Custom Pen myself but only if it is. Yours are...mine aren't.

A straight barrel slimline using 24kt gold and generic rosewood is hand turned and could be called hand crafted...it is hardly "custom" unless something unique is done to it even if it made for a specific buyer.
