Ok, total noob penturner here - I've made a grand total of 3 pens so far :-) But, #3 I tried a spray lacquer finish on (Deft). I put about 5-6 thin coats on - sorry, a cocobolo pen - and let it cure for several days. Then I assembled the pen. I wasn't overly happy with the finish, it was a bit wavy, but not having MM or a buffing setup yet, I decided to live with it. Then, I see the crack - right on top of the lower blank by the tranmission. Grr. Ok, maybe I can sand that area down with 320-400-600, fill the crack with CA, re-sand, and re-lacquer. So, I sand it down after masking off the transmission and nib. Whoa. That looks NICE! So, in a nutshell - has anyone ever applied a lacquer finish then sanded it off? I think I got the lacquer to penetrate the wood to a certain degree, as it has a different feel than the bare cocobolo, but I took the shine off and ended up with a really sharp looking satiny/low sheen finish that I really like.

Has anyone else done this on purpose or on accident? I think I'm going to have to try it again and see if I can do it on purpose :D

I know Jim - but it has a different feel than the Cocobolo did prior to finish being applied. I was curious, being that it's such an oily wood, but it sure seems like the lacquer penetrated the wood to some degree.

I'm sure that, at one time or another, almost everyone here has sanded off a finish after applying. I use the Deft spray laquer, it is pretty much my standard, with CA (super glue) a distant second. I can't recall using it on Coco which is an oily wood. Hang in there, we have all had losses and saved disasters. It's part of the 'fun' [:p] of penturning.

Thanks Frank - do you MM or buff your lacquer finishes? The finish I had on the pen was water clear, but had a slightly wavy look to it. Not bad, but enough that I noticed it. I'm thinking MM would have done a nice job on it, but I don't have any yet, so I couldn't try that out.

I'm not regarding this one as a loss, it's a save - and I like the pen better now than I did with the lacquer on [:)]

Thanks guys for all the help.
