I'm looking for a red and gold pen box ... any suggestions? We're going to a wedding in January and the couple are Chinese, was thinking of making a black pen and a white pen but with reading on the net about traditions and red seems to be the way to go.

Thanks.

Hi Marla,

I have unfinished pen cases that can easily be stained or painted to suit your needs. What I also like to do is to use a "gold" foil to frame the top of the pen case. Can snap a few pictures if it helps.

I also have a red (bright) pillow that is used to line the case so that the pen(s) rest comfortably.

Constant can print just about anything on top of a maple box. So you could get some cool art on the box if you wanted.

Thanks guys, your suggestions really help.

Peter, the pen case you have, is it large enough to hold 2 Jr. Gents? I'll PM you my email address for a picture. The wedding is Jan. 14, would I have it in time?

Marla, red is for wedding. Traditionally white is for funeral. But young couples nowadays probably do not follow the traditional as closely.

Best thing is to ask. I bet you anything the bride will still be wearing a white wedding dress.

My humble suggestion: pen plating is (definitely) gold and the blank gemstone red with gold matrix (http://www.penblanks.ca/product.php?productid=6949&cat=0&page=2)

Hi Branden, we ordered the Jade http://www.exoticblanks.com/index.p...ategory_id=45&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=60 and red with gold web http://www.exoticblanks.com/index.p...ategory_id=45&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=60 We were thinking of a Jr. Emperor in Jade for the groom and the red on a Jr. Statesman for the bride, along with Peter's box stained red and maybe engraved on the top with their names and wedding date?? ... do we pass inspection???:biggrin: You're right about the non-tradition because the picture on the inside of the invitation is of her in a white wedding gown and he's in a tux ... they look like kids ready for their prom, so young! We were told the ceremony is in Chinese because one of the sets of parents don't speak English.

Yes, you passed the inspection, but you are not quite adopted yet. Not until you can catch a fly in midair with chopsticks.:biggrin:

Did they specifically ask for "just their names and wedding date"?

I don't want to suggest too much since you still have the Jan 14/11 completion date to meet.

You might want to ask them if they want the "double happiness" symbol on the case also. Google "Chinese symbol double happiness". Just to be sure this is one of a link for this symbol (http://claireanddominic.ghostspace.net/?page_id=5)

They don't know about the pens and stuff, we were just thinking about the engraving, Curly wanted to have the pens engraved and I said no, I didn't want it to take away from the pens, plus my engaver called me yesterday and said he retired ... that's a whole other story that brings a tear to my eye, he was the best I found around here, a great guy, now someone else will need to be trained ... :crying: I hate to give the "new people" the box Wood-of-1kind (Peter) is sending to do so we'll see, they've been in business for a while and his business will be the third one they've amalgamated. Oh the stress ....

at least the box has been taken care of, thank-you Peter!!!

Even if the couple is more modern, parents probably are not. Culturally white is for funerals and death and it could really upset the traditional Chinese relatives. I think your idea of the red and gold pen will be a big hit. Red is good luck with the gold it will be perfect.
What a nice gift. I am sure that the couple with treasure both pens for many years to come.

For what it is worth the groom is from Taiwan but I don't think that should make a great deal of difference. I don't know where the bride side comes from. Wedding reception is in a vegetarian Chinese restaurant. Never heard of one of those before so I am looking forward to that part . Another co-worker said that might indicate some Buddhist leanings.

Crickett, if we ever get invited to eat at House of Branden Great Wall Gardens Court Palace Restaurant, we are bringing our own chopsticks and a fly swatter! I know he lives in Cow Town but I draw the line at flies perched on eating utensils.

Lets skip the engraving and try a decal on the box. I like the "Double Happiness" characters idea.

Pete

The wedding was today and the reception tomorrow. The wedding was a mix of traditional and modern, the bride in white with red flowers and the groom in a black tux. The ceremony was in Chinese with a translator for the important stuff like when to stand and sit.

A huge thank-you to Peter (wood-of-1kind) for the wonderful box he sent to us. Curly used a powdered stain mixed in water, once that was dry there were multiple coats of clear paint over top. The groom's pen is a Jr. Emperor in Arizona Jade trustone and the bride's pen is a Jr. Statesman in red with gold web trustone.

Beautiful as always Marla. Your feather blanks would have been gorgeous on these kits (hint, hint). The box is neat too, the molded sides make it look more substantial. Pete did a nice job on the finish, must have been fun trying not to sand through the dye job with all those contours and corners. How was the vegetarian Chinese cuisine?

Marla & Pete, great job on the pens and the box. Colours mean very much to the older Chinese people and these ensure that the newly weds have happiness and wealth in their future - this according to a Chinese friend of ours.

Beautiful pens and the box works great with them. I bet the food was good. We have lots of vegetarian Chinese food here in San Francisco and you would never miss the meat. Use of walnuts and different kinds of tofu make the dishes yummy.

Marla, since you did such a nice job on the pens and the box in total, very nice job. I wonder if i get a pen like that for 28Th anniversary on the 1-15, I think I stuck it out nicely:biggrin:. what ya say?

Thanks Cindy, Pete (Curly) talked to the groom at work yesterday (Monday) and they love the pens, he was surprised that we made them.

The food was fantastic! I only wish the restaurant was closer, when the traffic is good we can get there in about an hour. It's true what you say about not missing the meat, there was a plate of "cold cuts" and if no one told you it wasn't meat you'd never know the difference, same with the "chicken cutlet", it had a lemon sauce on it. About the only thing I didn't care for was the "cod", it had a funny taste but everyone else loved it.

28 years!!! Congratulations! After that long you deserve more than a pen!
