Hello from WA State. New to woodworking let alone turning. Bought a Jet 1015vs 2 weekends ago. Trashed 2 blanks and muddled my way through to finally make 1. Looking forward to the adventure

Welcome aboard Dennis. If you never used a lathe before or turning tools, I suggest if you can take a lesson at a woodcraft store or turners club or find a local turner to help you along. Then there are a ton of videos on utube today that can help. I also suggest forget making a pen and just practice shaping simple wood blanks that will look like a pen body. This way you get the feel of tool and reactions of the wood. Soon you will find muscle memory will take over and things will click in. Good luck and have fun. Ask any question you have right here on the sight. Plenty of folks that will help.

hi Dennis and welcome

Like JT I strongly suggest practicing on some scrap wood to make candle sticks, garden dinners etc and having some fun with your new lathe . There's plenty of time for pen making and it's about enjoy8ng the journey as much as the end result.

I still have some very " dubious bowls" around the house to remind me I have actually got better , as some times I do wonder...... Especially when my skew decided to cut a spiral. If you have not experienced that yet, you will !

Now if only I could cut a consistent spiral , where and when I wanted 🤔

Doing both. Taking a class and have found a local turner. Thank you.
