There have been several messages and comments reently on being able to tell the "obvious" difference between the various finishes. Some say they can always tell the difference by the "feel" of the finish. Others say they can always tell by the hard glossy appearance of a plastic.

For what its worth, I have kept all of the pens that I finished while making my pen finishing video. They are all new and from the same wood species. Guess what?? I have yet to find the 1st person, regardless of their experience, who can tell the difference between a friction polish shellac, lacquer, Waterlox, CA glue, or Enduro when presented with all of them at the same time and in new condition..

Another interesting observation is that a CA glue finish with a smooth matte finish is picked 100% of the time as having a softer. better feeling, and less of a plastic appearance than a friction polish shellac with a high gloss.

This may not be a scientific test, but it sure changed all of the previous opinions that I had held about appearance and feel. Has anyone else had a similar experience??

In the FWIW column a fellow pen turner showed a pen he had just completed a couple of days ago. When I felt the finish I would have swore it was CA, and when I asked, he said it was Behlen woodturner's finish. Could have knocked me over with a feather. I had never seen a friction polish shine like that and it had the same feel as CA.

I used to use only CA as a finish and it always felt hard and smooth to me. I recently started using Russ' CA/BLO method and still get the same gloss but I definitely feel a "softer" feel to it.

I believe that I can tell the difference between my CA/BLO finish and my previous lacquer finishes, but that likely has more to do with the quality of my finishing than anything else. I've only done a couple of pens using Russ's CA/BLO method and I really like the feel of them. I don't find it hard at all.
My lacquer finishes looked quite good, but did not hold up as well as I would have liked.
