Our female Vizsla (the one on the left), was recently diagnosed with a condition where her liver is unable to process copper. Part of her treatment is for her to take Cuprimine for the next 3-6 months at a whooping $800 for a one month supply. LOML did some research and found a Canadian company which will supply 100 pills (same dose) for $83, including shipping. Guess which way we went. GO CANADA!!

Glad we could help!!

Just out of curiousity, where does the copper exposure come from. I realize we are all exposed to "elements" all the time but never really gave copper much of a thought

Question was the source in the states from a Veterinarian supply & the Canadian for humans? Ran into this when I had Siberians. same medicine from same manufacturer but if it was sold for animals it cost way more!

Veterinarians charge almost the same for the a given procedure as people Doctors charge. But it has to be much harder to diagnose a problem with an animal.
I imagine that there are trace elements in the food, and possibly the drinking water, and if she hunts, what's in the soil she's traveling over, or what's in the things she retrieves?

The vet said she was getting the copper from trace elements in her food, and possibly the water. We don't hunt her. Her domain is our back yard which consists of beautiful East Tennessee chirt.

I just ordered a pescription for my diabeties (actos) was $808. in walgreens I got it from Canada for the generic was $45. WAS TOLD U.S. has a minimum that the pharmicies can charge....

Glad to hear you found a good solution for your dog at a fraction of the price. I hope she gets better soon.

No surprise your vet has the medication jacked up to $800/mo. Since veterinary care tends to be cash-based (no insurance), their business goes up and down with the economy as people adjust their discretionary spending. I wonder what it would've cost 5 years ago.

The people at my local vet clinic have been much more aggressive in their sales tactics the past few years, and they really push treatments my cat doesn't really need (he's an indoor cat). Not to mention the esoteric (and costly!) pet food. I can sympathize with their economic situation, but sometimes the up-selling routine is almost shameful. I might have to shop around a bit for another clinic, but I suspect they're all doing it.

Here in Australai medicines (for humans) are subsidised by the govenrment and if that medicine is on the subsidised list (most are) most are a maximum of $30 for a month supply.

If you are a pensioner or have a Health Care card you pay $5.80.

Actually the vet was just as surprised as we were. He said that was the first time he had ever prescrived Cupramine. We talked to another vet we know, and she was just as surprised at the cost. The huge cost differential is probably due to FDA regs somewhere. I wonder who is getting the payoff?
