UPS is just bad at heavy shipments

Saved up and bought a 12 inch Craftsman bench model drill press. It arrived yesterday from UPS and the box was ripped open, styrofoam was falling out the side, and as the UPS guy brought it to my front porch, I could hear parts rattling around inside.

Needless to say, I refused the shipment, called Sears, and demanded a full refund.

So I went to Craig's List and just picked up a 20 year old Craftsman floor model with a MT2 taper chuck. All steel construction. No rust. And it runs really quiet and there's no vibration. Even has a light!

The guy cared for his tools and it shows... $200 with an American made tool dolly on which to roll the thing around.

I actually kind of happy UPS damaged the first one. It was the same price and not nearly as good as this old but good unit!

I wouldnt say its just ups because it happened to me a few weeks ago. It was shipped fedex and it was a jet jdp-12 in one box and jet jwbs10os band saw in the other. Both were damaged beond repair. Did have insurance on them but pain waiting for it.

Inadequate packaging may be the case, however when you see the condition that some packages arrive in, it makes you wonder if any amount of packaging is going to protect it. I think they take a fragile label as a personal challenge.

There was one guy on another forum a few weeks back who's package had tire tracks on it :)

I'm not pointing fingers at any company as a whole. I think its more along the lines of disgruntled employees or somebody having a bad day. Even if say the employee accidentally drives the forks of a forklift through the box, if he doesn't tell anybody, he won't ever get in trouble over it. Just rotate the box so that the damage is hidden... problem solved... What can I say, I was a forklift driver... I've done it :).
 
If peanuts were falling out and things were rattling I would bet it was sears fault. Peanuts are no way to safely pack a large heavy object. We see it all the time.
