Unknown "fruit"

I found this in an old fence row in South Arkansas yesterday. I have never seen anything like it before. Does anyone know what it may be?

By the size of those thorns it almost has to be a lemon or native rootstock orange.

Not Osage orange!

I like Bob's reply..."everlasting Gobstopper" but after googleing it,
it must be the trifoliate orange! Thanks Warren!

Good ol worthless knowledge coming through again! Haha. That is a wicked looking plant. The one I saw was right near a river bank but after looking at google it apparently came from China where it was used for hedges. Pretty cool

Osage orange. We called them hedge apples.

It is a trifoliate orange, and NOT a hedge apple from the osage orange tree.

Hedge apples are larger, vivid green, with a very rough, cobbled surface.

The 'fruit' is sort of out of focus.....can't see if it is smooth or 'bumpy'?

Typically Osage{Maclura pomifera} will have a dark color, but not always(it depends on the soil and nutrients in the soil), but it generally is always 'bumpy'.

Looks like a quince to me, especially the thorns.

It will become the most disgusting pulpy orange juice ever...if then placed in a carton i suspect it will be called Jenny Craig.
