Got a free 3 year old Olevia 37" LCD TV over the weekend.

It was free because of the fact that it has two "shut off" modes. One of these two happen every hour or so.

One: Screen flashes white, then the LCD goes black. Audio and backlight continue to run. Requires power cycling the TV.

Two: Screen, backlight and audio all shut off. Turns itself back on after 10 seconds or so.

Overheating power supply, bad capacitor, something like that most likely. I'll crack it open over Christmas break. I can handle those flaws for free...

Nice thing is because of the large number of inputs, I am able to retire my old Yamaha receiver. That's the big gap in the cabinet. My son puts his PS3 in there on occasion. The 27" CRT is gone too. YAY!

Yeah, I could never justify buying a new HD tv... The old CRT just keeps on ticking.

It's now in my daughter's room so she can watch the occasional DVD. Her 20" LCD went to her brother so he can plug his PS3 into it.

My kids have WAY too much technology. Both have TVs, DVD players, laptops (son also has a desktop), daughter has ipods, son has PSPs. Only my son (18) has a phone though. My daughter (7) keeps begging... Gah!

Isn't it great when you get something like that free? Especially when you can fix it yourself.

My neighbor put a 46 inch widescreen projection tv out on the curb with a "free" sign on it, because they got a flat panel. It works perfectly, just a few small scratches on the plastic screen. It replaced the 27 inch in the kids playrool and they are thrilled.

And yes, kids will keep begging. Mine 19, 17, and 12 have more tech than I do. I have better tools though.
