Over a year ago, I went up to Minnesota and spent the weekend with a college buddy. He took me ice fishing, and we caught up after many years of not seeing one another. We went to Bible college at Northwestern in St. Paul in 1981, by the way, so we go way back.

Anyhoo, I show him my pens, he says he needs a hobby and thinks pens are cool, buys a Turncrafter lathe off an old guy with Parkinsons four months ago, has no money for all the tools required to use it, and besides, it's below freezing in his garage in MN.

So what did I do? I cashed in a bunch of my frequent flyer miles and bought him a first class ticket to Houston. I sent him the ticket and said, "pack your pen kits and bushings, you're coming to warmer Houston for a turner's weekend!"

That was two weeks ago. His wife told me he was so excited he hasn't been able to sleep since I got his airline ticket. He's never flown first class and would do anything to escape the winter days up there.

I will post pix of our work and tell you more about the weekend as it unfolds. He arrives Friday morning. What he doesn't know is that I have a special treat in store for him... we're going to the indoor shooting range to shoot my handguns... I don't think he's ever fired a weapon before.

You know, you can come to Texas to turn a pen, but you can't leave without discharging a handgun at least once, eh?

sounds like fun...would have cool if he could have come next weekend when we're having a IAP meeting!

oooh, that would have been cool! He would have loved that, Penguin!

El D, I plan to take him to Rudy's for wet brisket. It's my favorite in Houston. Of course, if I lived in Lockhart, I'd take him to one of the many amazing BBQ places up your way. You live in BBQ heaven!

Just thought I'd come back to this thread and say that Scott and I had a great time!

Scott made three pens, repaired a fourth, and I even finished up one.

Sorry, we were too busy turning pens to take pics, but maybe he will come back to this thread and add a few. I'll shoot him a link to it!
