I am starting to make a few pendants and have a question about how to turn the edge round.

I started out cutting on the edge, but this produces a lot of chatter, tool jump and tearout.

I have the pendant held with double sided tape on the head stock side and have a scrap block and live center holding it firm on the tail stock side.

I thought to turn and plunge cut into the flat face of the pendant; kind of trepanning cut. Is there any reason this wouldn't work??

Use a skew. Hold it flat, like a scraper, a little above center and make sure it is tilted down so that you are just scraping the pendant rather than cutting it. I use this technique on all of my pendants and it works every time. Take light cuts and work it around the edge until you get the shape you are looking for.
