I received a PSI Variable Speed Lathe for a birthday present in August. I have used it to learn pen turning and made about 20 pens to date. The varialble speed controller went out this weekend. The lathe won't turn on at all.

The speed controller is on the way back to PSI, under warranty. Talking with them, I got the idea this may be a common problem.

Anyone else out there have a problem with the lathe motor or variable speed controller?

Thanks for the input.

John, I have the PSI CarbaTec VS. I had the power switch fail twice. The first time it blew so that I could not cut the motor off. I turned until I got the new switch by plugging and unplugging the power cord. The second time it blew with the power off. I bought a heavier duty switch from a local hardware store three years ago and have not had another problem. That has been the only problem other than the brushes wearing out and needing to be replaced. Hopefully the Turncrafter will behave with the new VS motor.

I have the smaller Turncrafter lathe (MT1) and have had no problems in the two years.
That does not of course mean that they don't have a common problem.
