Trying to make this more appealing, need advice.

I have gone back and forth on different backgrounds, white box or no. Going to also try and take my setup outside tomorrow for more natural light.

I think the composition is great. My only suggestion for this specific pen would be a lighter background (doesn't have to be white) so the edges stand out better.

Looks good. When I first saw the photo, I was looking for glare off the pen. I agree as a lighter background would be better. I use a tan cloth for my photo shots. Here is my setup.

Clamp on lights from Harbor Freight, curly Q bulbs, thin cloth diffusers made by my wife. They clamp on overhead cabinets so I can position them on the bottom frame or the doors for best effect. No way to change tones. I also have grey or brown cloth if needed for the background.
