I'm about to start making my first flag, and I found one on the net with an awesome color treatment I'd like to do for mine. I've been practicing with the Minwax Scarlet and True Blue translucent stains recommended for flags, but they're not coming out nearly as saturated as I'd like to see, like in the pic. Other than the light torching, any idea what kind of color treatment was used to make these nice rich colors? I'm only familiar with stains, so I'm wondering if a dye was used here.

You have a couple things going on here. One this was hand carved which leaves alot of open grain and with open grain you get deeper penetration. Second thing this was burned under the staining thus the darker colors. trying to duplicate the look is a trial and error thing No one here will be able to tell you exactly to match the colors and what stains to use. Try stains and or dyes like leather dyes that have deep colors. Oil stains will not get you there. Transtint dyes is another possibly trial.
