Has anyone worked with the tru-stone mother of pearls? I've been told that they are just resin and dye, to simulate the look of MOP. In that sense, they seem pretty much the same as kirinite or any other MOP-simulated blank (except a bit more expensive). Is that the case? I was really looking for something that would simulate the look and feel of real MOP, which kirnite and other resins do not. If anyone has worked with the Tru-stone version, I'd love to get your take and hear about your experience.

I am not a chemist so do not know what every blank out there is made of. I have used black, white and pink MOP trustone blanks and love them. They have a great look to them that is deeper than acrylics that mimic this. There are some that say that not all trustone material is as hard as each one. To me and this is just my opinion the MOP is easy to turn and a little brittle so care is needed when drilling and turning. There is no stone in these so it is more acrylic but what type I have no idea. It is also a good idea to back paint the blank and or the tube (I just do inside the blank). I will include a couple photos of pens I made. One set is a wedding gift I made for my Nephew and his wife a few years ago. They polished to a great shine and the effervescence is real nice. That is what I like about Trustone. Now you know MOP is a shell and not a stone. I have used some other material that has the same effect made by OMAS. I used their silver and it is outstanding. Always so hard to photo the glitter effect you get with these type materials. So I am just stating what I have seen. I will see if i have a photo of the OMAS pen. I looked and I must have deleted all my photos of the OMAS silver pen because I just could not get a good enough photo to show off that beautiful material. May have to try again if you want me to show you.

Agreed. Nice pens and thanks for the photos. I've got some of that silver Oma's. Fabulous blank. I'm actually looking at using the trustone MOP for a knife handle.

Beautiful pens, John. I'm curious....how did you get the gold in the engravings there?
I had them engraved professionally. He did the box also. Unfortunately it was not the box I sent him to do because he messed it up so I had to scramble to get a box done to get for them on time. He engraved the box I wanted backwards so I did not like it. Had to settle for one he had.
