Anyone have a strong opinion either way about which is better? I need to get a respirator or my turning days are numbered. Guess age and particulates are not a good mix. The Triton is cheaper but I want to know about performance. Thanks in advance.

I have the Triton, use it occasionally (when I turn cocobolo and other "allergic" woods - or do "big" turning)

I like it but still prefer just safety glasses.

I bought the Triton and I wrote a review on my website, link below. In my research the trend plugged up too quickly and the batteries didn't last. I like my triton. I don't have iron lungs like Ed does. :D

I have a Trend shield and have never had a problem with either batteries lasting or it plugging up, whatever that means. Sure is nice on those warm summer days, almost feels like an air conditioner!:)

I have the Triton but I don't think there will be a huge difference between the two. Toolcrazy's research was better than mine, I only checked out the Triton.

I don't use mine as much as I thought I would because my work habits make it difficult and I am lazy. My strong allergies come from CA smell and especially from microfine CA dust.

Here is my procedure and why Helmets and masks drive me up the wall, leaving me to the mercies of CA dust which makes me sick:
With my helmet on, I turn a blank down, apply a thin coat of CA, let it harden (about 10 seconds) sand briefly (5 to 10 seconds) apply a medium of medium CA or even two.

While letting the CA cure for 10 to 15 minutes, take helmet off and get a cup of coffee or do something else.

Put helmet back on, sand for 15 to 30 seconds, apply two light coats of medium CA, take helmet off, and go do something else.

15 minutes later, put helmet back on, sand, apply another coat of CA or two; take helmet off while final coats are curing.

10 minutes later put helmet back on and finish blank.

I doubt that there are many like me, and most people will probably work continuously at the lathe. For these people, the helmet and other masks work fine. Pen making for me is a hobby for relaxing and my goals are to take my time and make a good pen, babying it as I go. But my one pet peeve is taking the helmet on and off, on and off.

AS a result, I changed my approach and built an effective compact Dust Collector system. On four pens that I did with the DC system by itself the DC does a good job of allowing me to do what I like without being cumbered by a mask or helmet.

GIVE the Triton or Trend a go, if they work, GREAT! If Not, there is one more option - a good strong sucking DC system. (But they are noisy unless you work at quieting it down.)

I've got the beginnings of a compact dust collector system but I've had bronchitis for three weeks now. Kept me from Bubbasville...:(. I haven't done any woodworking or yard work trying to get through this. This pollen season has been terrible. Figured I need to do my part to be rid of this crud. Right now I'm on the second round of antibiotics. I've worn a paper mask under the face shield but don't think it works too well... especially when the face shield fogs up. Only had bronchitis one time worse... in a yard period while in the Navy. They were doing some rip out on the ventilation system next door and of course it got into our compartment also. Go figure. Had my flight surgeon tell me that a body can only tolerate so much then you develop an allergy to it. Guess I've had enough pollen. :(

I agree. The trend works very well for me and the batteries last 4 hours each. I have 2 and never seemed to have been without a charged battery.

Hank, I let my DC take care of the CA fumes. I actually use a standard face shield while turning larger items, but the Triton goes on when it's time to sand. No more sinus issues now.

As another consideration, Trend has a newer version (Pro) that is supposed to be better balanced, longer life batteries and better filtration. Comming out end of month.
