Anybody using a Tormek/Jet wet sharpener on their lathe tools?

I have a Jet that I use for my chisles and planes but I use my Delta 23-710 slow speed grinder with a white wheel for the lathe tools. I do notice that I have to dress the wheel a LOT more and that the bevels are not as neat and clean as I would like. I wonder if I would get a longer lasting edge on my Jet even though it would be very tedious and slow ( I would think ).

Maybe it is time to get a better slow speed grinder, the delta wheels are not that great, they wear REAL fast and are such a small diameter I worry about the amount of hollow grind. It is only about 5" in diameter.

Any recomendations?

I have the Tormek and love it. I shape my tools ( for instance, rounding a skew or changing the bevel on my Delta 8" wheel grinder, white stone, being careful to not overheat the edge. I then take it to my Tormek, select the right jig, set uo, and finish grinding it on the wet wheel followed by the leather hone. After this I have to just re-hone 4 or 5 times, before I have to resharpen on the wet wheel. I only use the Delta for initial shaping of my tool. Hope this helps

Once you have your tools to the shape you want, sharpening with the Tormek does not take that much extra time. I think it is worth it and I believe it keeps the edge longer.

It also takes off much less of the steel.

neil, i use the tormek and have had it 3 years now no trouble, its easy, fast and its built like a rolls royce. its that good i even sharpen my utility knife blades on it. at $2 for five they are expensive, regards colin.

I have a Tormek sitting withing arm's length of my lathe. I tur till the tool needs dressing up and then twist to the Tormek and fix the tools edge. Then back in a minute or so to turning. Scary sharp tools definitely make turning earier, quicker, and a lot of fun. Couldn't very easily turn efficiently without the Tormek. :D]
