So now that I have a couple new tool handles turned, any suggestions for how to finish them.

I have heard from one side that says no finish and leave them a little rough for a better grip, but I do not like that idea. I would rather have a nice finish as the tools we buy have. My normal finish in my shop is either a tung oil or a tung oil/linseed oil mix (ala David Marks :-)) though I don't think that wouls be a good choice here.

Thanks

Neil

Tung would be a nice finish, I personaly use a FP based on Bonnie Kline's formula. 1 part BLO; 1 part Shellac; and 1 part shellac (3lb cut is best) It holds up decent enough for a handle. I don't want a "coating" as it will be rough handled.

Oh, and on experiance... Fresh cherry handles, when stored in a PVC tube holder, will darken in a 2 tone pattern!! [:o)]

I finish mine with sanding seal and EEE and I don't need a good grip if your tools are very sharp and you use the bevel your cut will be smooth, easy and neat

I used Enduro on this one:

[:I] Woops!! Yea, that is what I meant to type!! I really should remember to proof-read internet postings like e-mails for work!

Serge, that is not purpleheart, it looks like dyed maple from here.

<br />Uh, I believe Bonnie's formula is 1 part shellac flakes, 1 part boiled linseed oil and 1 part denatured alcohol.

Nope, it's dyed. The enduro did a very nice job, but it was finished OFF of the lathe. I applied the enduro lengthwise with those 'foam' brushes. I polished the finish w/MM, that enduro is some HARD STUFF!
