Greetings from Nebraska.

There was a big grass / corn stubble fire about a quarter mile Southwest of our house tonight. Sometimes a quarter mile seems like a long ways away, but when there is a fire it seems pretty close. It's a good thing our rural fire department was on the spot and got it under control before it burned the power lines down or reached any of the houses in our subdivision. We sure could use some moisture - almost no snow this winter in our area. I snapped the picture from my deck. - Dave

Yikes! A quarter mile is really close...its just about 1300 feet...

We in Colorado are getting rain, sleet and a tiny bit of snow. Hoping this storm moves up your way tomorrow.

Yikes! Glad that you are safe! Being that close is no joke.

When I was living in Montana (a lot of wildfires) there was a fire that died out also about 1/4 mile from my house. I lived at the top of a mountain where the fire came up the other side but couldn't make it over the top.

Fire is no fun........we here in central NJ get quickly spreading forest fires in spring through the thick pine barrens - they travel fast and burn hot due to the flammability of the pine sap and pitch. I cringe any time I hear of a forest fire anywhere - they are pretty damn scary! Glad you are safe!

Glad you were safe... closest I've ever been to a fire is about a 1/4 mile too... the neighbor's house burned one night and is just about 1/4 mile or maybe less from us... think some squatters were evicted and set the house ablaze. It ain't fun to wake in the middle of the night with fire engines and flames all around.

I spent a good number of years as a volunteer firefighter. Didn't keep count of the number of nights i got little or no sleep, and still got up to go to work. Auto accidents, sick calls, fires, odd smells--all were hard to go back to sleep from. The career firefighters give up 24 hour blocks of life to do what they do as well--which means they miss science fairs and 5th-grade basketball games to keep us safe.
Never a bad time to send a note saying "thanks" to your local fire department--feels good to hear them at the monthly meetings!! Let them know you're grateful they were there, and even more grateful they weren't at your house!! :>)
Thanks!!
