Here is a good one I just gleaned off the net. Do you have a disk sander, maybe one with a larger sanding disk?? I have a 9" disk sander myself and I just found a cool trick. Mark out a 5" circle and use an old skew to "cut" it at this line. Now you can change out the 5" disk so you have dual grits on the sander! The faster running outer ring can rough shape with maybe 50 grit, and a finer grit inner disk (and cheaper might I add) can handle the finish work. Cool, Huh?? :D

Seriously, that sounds very clever. I will have to try that (with a skew that is never used at the lathe, that is. I imagine the sandpaper will not be kind to the skew.)
