Tried this for the first time. Glued up a board into checkerboard pattern but this time they were only 1/4" squares . I figured that it might be impossible to align the rings good enough to be presentable due to the small size of the squares and the angle of the cut and the kerf from the cutters with every ring and it all might add up into a disaster ..

It actually turned out better than I expected . It surely could be better but this experiment is not going into the waste wood box after all.

I really like the outcome - has an excitement to it!
Bill, what is the final size of the bowl? At 1/4" squares it must be fairly small?
Thanks for experimenting and showing.

It is exactly 7" measured at the rim and 3 3/4" high.

I had planned for a bigger one between 8 and 9 " diameter but when re-sawing the square straight line glue up into strips to make a checkerboard glue up I lost a lot due to wood removed with so many saw cuts even when using a 1/8" blade . I wound up with a rectangle instead of a square  so lost size when re-squaring it.
