I've had a HF dust collector for the last 3-4 years . I have it plumbed with 4 inch PVC and its located in the utility building next to shop so I've never changed the bag or installed a winn filter, so my first plan is to buy a .5 micron Winn and plastic bags, second is get a 30 gal. can and make a thien baffel. Two questions first should I change the duct work to 2 1/2 inch and second has anyone made their own thien or have plans for one?

ok, so i'm confused, why for are you changing it now? In any case, if you are going to replumb anything go larger, not smaller. Seriously, the objective is to move as much air as possible away from your lungs and through the filters, I can't possibly see why you would want to reduce the size of the pipes. If you are going to AC the shop and want to keep all that expensively cooled air in the shop instead of blowing it out into the neighbors yard with all the dust, there is still no reason to reduce the flow from the tool to the filter. Instead of the old bags that just let the dust go outside the shop, you now just need to remove it from the air with the filters. But the key is still to move as much dust containing air away from you and your tools and move it through the filtration stations.

So a little more info may help with the planning advice.

Roy, go over to bt3central.com and look around. You'll find more hf dc builds than you can shake a stick at. With pics.

If you aren't and don't plan to return the air to the shop, just remove the filters and let it blow free. The less restriction on the system, the better the air flow.
