Yesterday, my Crapsman 12 in bench drill press motor sparked and tripped the breaker. Reset the breaker, turned on the drill press, sparked and tripped the breaker again. Dont know what happened, it has been running great. Checked the price of a new motor, I might as well buy a new drill press for that money.
So my question, whats a good bench top drill press with at least a 3in quill travel, for $150-$200? Or does someone know of a good deal on a floor model for under $200? Right now my budget wont allow anything more than $200.
I know alot of you drill with your lathe, I do sometimes too. But, I also use my drill press for other things.
Thanks

Try getting a used one on craigs list. That's where I buy allot of my tools and as long as you plug them in and ensure they work, you can generally find some really good deals.

Pull the bottom plate and see if there is a collar that came loose, had it happen to mine,
pushed the collar back up into place and tightened it and haven't had a problem since.

I just recently picked up a sweet old gal for my shop. She gives the place a good flair and reminds me that quality is job #1.

Two things you might look into before junking the old press:

Take the motor in to a motor rebuilder and see what it would cost to repair it (or maybe see if they have a rebuilt one in stock that will replace it).

Convert to DC with a variable speed motor controller to give you the ability of infinite speed control at the turn of a knob and reversibility on top of it. Most treadmill motors are adaptable to this (you usually have to step the speed down as they are usually high speed motors) and high end DC speed controllers can be had on Ebay or surplus sellers at good prices with a bit of looking.
