We've got a Powermatic model 66 in the shop and I'm in the process of cutting our new throat plate for both straight and 45 deg mitered cuts. I made the straight up and down, 90 deg, cut no problem so now I'm faced with making the 45 deg cut. I can't imagine this is done the same way the 90 is...by just raising the blade straight up through the plate.

How do you go about making this 45 deg cut in a throat plate?

It absolutely is. Now on some saws the blade does not sit far enough down when angled and it will teeter the blank plate. In this case use a 7 1/4" blade to make the initial cut. Then switch out to the 10" blade and it will fit in the cut from the smaller blade. Make sure you clamp that blank down in a manner so that it is safe and you are not pushing down with your hand. Just clamp some boards across the 2 ends. Works well. You can make zero clearance plates for any angle

The blade will always move parallel to the angle it's set at so if it's set at 45 degrees it will move in that direction. Clamp your fence down over the throat plate (NOT over the blade) and proceed just as you did with the 90 degree angle.
