I had a couple of goes trying to segment pens that were attractive all the way around the blank, with varying success.
Maybe the laser is the answer!!!

Nice work, what laser are you using?
Thanks Steve. I bought an Xtool S1. Two features stood out to me. One being it has an auto focus feature and secondly the laser modules can be swapped out very easily. They have 10 watt, 20 watt , 40 watt diode modules as well as a 2 watt IR module. The S1 is a recommended laser for woodworking. I'm loving it, very easy to use.
