So I've been expecting a visit from Stonepecker (Wayne). Last night he calls me and says he's arrived and that he is at the local restaurant. So I head over there and sure enough there's Wayne sitting at a table with another fellow. Wayne introduces the guy and says the he they were both sitting alone and the guy had asked if he could sit down and visit. So we all start chatting and Wayne tells this gentleman that we know each other through IAP, and what the IAP is, and about pen turning in general. This guy seemed to be really interested, asking all kinds of questions. After we talk pens and penturning a while, he says he does a little wood working, but nothing as cool as penturning. He says he has some small projects with him he wants to show us and heads outside to get them. He returns with 4 black vinyl pouches, kind of like what pens go in. Well he opens the 4 pouches and proceeds to pull out 4 stunning pens! What the............... The last two pens that come out of the pouches I recognize, because I've seen them before. It's at this point that I realize I've been had, and that the gentleman sitting at the table with Wayne and I is no stranger. It's Bob Leibo! [strike] It's at that point I moved to a different table. You're judged by the company you keep, you know.... [/strike]. After supper, I showed the fellas the messiest shop in western South Dakota, and we shot the bull some more. Wayne gave me a pink towel that he stole from Chuck's place when was there and some chunks of wood. Bob brought both Wayne and I a travel mug and I sent Wayne home with some wood, antler, and a small stool. Bob rode his motorcycle though and didn't have any room to take anything back with him. It was great time and it was a pleasure to meet both Bob and Wayne. You guys got me good!

There are pictures, but they are on Wayne's and Bob's smart phones. I'll have to wait for them to drop by.

Have the other residents of Faith started complaining about all the tourists you are attracting to town? If this keeps up the town might have to get a real traffic light instead of that simple blinker.

I don't know who these guys are talking about but this story was shall we say embellished a little bit.
Here's the true story..... I went out for milk and somehow made a wrong turn. By the time I realized how bad I screwed up I was lost, a million miles from home and almost out of gas! Rather than make it even worse and hoping Derek would help me out I called him to help me with some directions. He said since I was close to his house to stop by for a glass of water and some badly needed gas to make my way home. Apparently the entire town of Faith, all 75 of them, heard I was coming because this is what I saw as my tired and confused fat butt rolled into town.
Now you know the truth !!!

Well I do believe Bob took another wrong turn. He ended up in Colorado Springs at the Harley dealership. Of course since he was already here he bought me the beer he promised during the Bash. Since I was working, I had to opt for a Dads Root Beer over lunch. It's always great to meet the folks from IAP. He climb back on his Harley after lunch and headed on up and over the Rockies. Maybe next time through will have a chance to go for a ride together. Oh and he showed me a few of his awesome pens and I showed him a few of my meager pens. Sorry no selfies taken. Might be able to get some security footage from the dealership. Thanks again for lunch Bob!

That's some story.

Derek Oliver – It Wasn't My Fault!

There I was at the NIC Art Fest in Casper, WY, surrounded by customers (ok, maybe just one), when I hear this voice yell "Hi, John. I know you but you don't know me." I turn and this older biker gentleman says "I'm Bob Leibo from IAP". We shook hands and he immediately asked to see my Emperor in cream swirl bakelite, admired it, then quietly attempted to put it into his shirt pocket. After I wrestled it back, we spoke for awhile (after I locked up the pen) and he told me that he and Wayne (Stonepecker) were on their way to ambush Derek Oliver at his house, and under penalty of having all my lathe tools dulled professionally (by him), I was not to warn Derek. Sorry, Derek!

We talked some more, shook hands again and he left (a quick check showed that I had most of my pens still there).

I know – no pictures, it didn't happen. I tried, but Bob kept whispering something about him being in witness protection.

All kidding aside, it was great to meet an IAP member in person. It looks like he had a great trip!

Boy, what a wrong turn that was! I pulled into the parking lot where Vic works and I would swear there was a bike rally. At least a hundred bikes in the parking lot, more inside plus the Harley Museum! How cool is that? I felt like I died and went to bike heaven. And don't let Vic kid you, his pens take a back seat to no ones. I finally got to see my first Scrimshaw pen that he had. Awesome. Then it was off for a quick hop over the hill.....

Older Gentleman???? Old compared to whom? This should be good~
Biker? 5 feet tall wearing shorts and flip-flops? Oye....
I do have to say you had one heck of a lot of pens and the one form the front page is even nicer in person.

For those who say no pic, never happened....
On the way out of Faith, I discovered what all the commotion was about, Derek opened his new shop....but I was not intimidated, we found where they put my picture up on a wall also, so there !!! Then we made a few more wrong turns and are headed home~

By the way, has anyone seen or heard from Wayne? Did he ever make it out of Faith? He said he struck up a friendship with the local sheriff. Hmmm?

I heard a rumor as to why they are not posting pictures of themselves with Derek. He thinks he is Derek Zoolander and when someone pulls out a camera he hollers "Magnum"

Am I the only one that thinks this should be his avatar?

Wayne left here. He was headed to North Dakota for a county fair over the Fourth. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but right after he left, it was reported that the were several of the city's phone books missing.....

 Yeah...he sent me a picture of a phone book. I thought it was a travel brochure :biggrin:

I'm back home

After reading everything I am laughing my head off over this.

I had such a great time before, during, and after my visit to Faith .... that it is going to take a few days to put all my thoughts down in words and pictures. I will do so in another posting.

Before that, I do want to say that Bob and I have been planning this little surprise for over a month. (See, we can keep secrets) And it went over Beautifully. People, I couldn't get a picture of Derek's face when he realized the truth. It would have given the surprise away. But let me say that meeting these two has been the highlight of this summer. I said it before and I will say it again......."GO AND MEET EACHOTHER!" I knew Bob was a joker! Heck we all know that but he is one of the nicest, funniest, most giving fellows I have met from the IAP. OLD? Nope! He is very young at heart and my only complaint was that the time we shared was to damn short.
And now about the Resident of Faith. I always thought he was older before seeing him for the first time. This "kid" has a heart of gold. Quick with the 'one-liners' and just as smart as can be. While his shop is a mess and he wouldn't let me clean anything....... he has made some fantastic thing for himself to use in his woodworking.

I will post more later. For now, this is an open "THANK YOU" to two of the greats of the IAP. I can't begin to say enough about these gentlemen. Yes, I know, as you all do, that they are Clowns with a capital "C". But first and formost, they are gentle people. Very caring! And I am proud to call them my FRIENDS!

Bob, Derek, my hat is off to both of you GENTLEMEN!
We have to do this again soon.

Wayne

My shop is a mess?! Good thing you didn't see it before I straightened up a little!

A messy shop means you are working in it and from what you showed me.....You do some very fine work. I am really studying the plans you gave me Derek. I need to make some of these handy dandy things.

 Now tell us, Which wall did you hang your trophy ( errrr...pink decoration)?

ROFL.......Population doubled from 500 to 1000.

Population is only 430+. The phone books with everything included is only 25 pages. That includes the three blank pages in back for personal notes.

LOL:biggrin:
