Zach who is my wife's first cousin once removed (figure that relationship out) and his family paid us a visit today. Zach is 9 and has turned a couple of pens and wanted to spend some time in my shop. Under the watchful eye of his Grandfather, I helped him turn a small bowl. He learned quickly and made all of the final passes on the bowl. We ran out of time so the bowl is a little thicker than he wanted. He used a bowl gouge on the outside and a hollowing tool on the inside.

That's your wife's 1st cousins son. That's what the once removed means. Awesome getting him to turn. My kids are 20 and 17 and are scared of it.

Get them started early! If he's comfortable with a lathe at 9, that is a great start. There are very few things better than turning raw materials into finished works of art.
