I was looking at my turning tools and realized I have never used my scraper. It is brand new, never been sharpened and lonely. So I picked it up and realized I have no idea what it is used for nor do have a clue how to sharpen it. In the CSUSA catalog it says their favorite tool for pen turning or something to that effect

Any pointers?

can't say that I recall ever using a scraper on a pen...I do use them on bowls and boxes.

which one is it...maybe I'd be interested in buying it.

you can use them when you start rounding an acrylic blank since they are less aggressive than a gouge which if you put too much pressure you can make a crack

I use a gouge to round out the blank then I use my scrapers for everything else. I am lucky enough to have a Tormek for sharpening. I just throw on the "tool rest" accessory and it's ready for the lathe in just a few seconds. Is this "purist" lathe work...no. But it works well with fewer or no catches and, for me, that's what matters.

What is a negative rake?

So, JC Turner, SInce you use it would I just keep the bevel that is on it and do I want a bur like on a card scraper or no bur?

There is a small learning curve to using scrapers. Easiest way to sharpen a scraper is with this tool. Works with all sizes and scraper profiles except carbide cutters to raise a burr. I also use my bench grinder and Wolverine platform jig to sharpen my scrapers.

Do not like to use a scraper on spindle turning except for inside end grain box. Watched a you-tube video of guy making birdcalls using his scraper, not impress with wood surface nor finish of his calls. He sells a lot because been making them for over twenty years and has won several competitions. Cannot argue with success!

Some turners still use scrapers & lots of sand paper on their bowls.

Sound not too good on this one.

Good info on negative rake scraper at Wood working projects, articles, community and vendors for the lathe.

When you order an acrylic blank from Cusa they always throw in a print out of how to grind your scraper. I would bet it's on their website somewhere. I used a scraper all the time when doing acrylic pens until I bought a carbide tool. I've used it on bowls as well.

You grind the top of the scraper with the same bevel as underneath. It doesn't have to be ground back too far. It makes the tool less aggressive and there is less chance of getting a dig-in or bad catch.
