John has been working with me to make something that would allow me to (1) use my existing tool rest that I like... and (2) be able to get the tool rest as close as possible to the pen blank.

What he came up with was a dead center that mounts in my collet chuck...

Works like a charm....

I had the same problem, nice fix you guys. I also realized that when I replaced the nut under the tool rest holder that I turned the handle towards the floor thus enabling me to keep my knuckles scraped up. :redface:
